Community is an open space surrounded by studios for art exhibitions and creative work for anyone in the community. Located in a light industrial area, we are dedicated to the promotion of young as well as established artists and creative people from various disciplines.
Studio spaces are rented out to various people with creative talent.
One of these is used by former DUT lecturer, John Roome. John specializes in Printmaking, Drawing and Painting. His interests range from urban landscapes to portraits.
” I am mainly inspired by the everyday experience of living in Durban. In my work I combine the woodcut process with painting. I use techniques of woodcut to produce images that are printed onto paper. The prints are sometimes left as black and white images, but sometimes I hand – colour them. I also paint onto the woodblock itself to produce relief paintings that have the texture and graphic quality of the woodcut process”
Visit Community to see John’s studio and watch him work.
Artist Gail Baxter rents a studio upstairs and teaches from there.
