The Saunter Review.
“We serve small plates in an array of global flavours.
The idea is to have people share food, the way it’s intended to be at any family dining room table. “
That is exactly what happens at this relaxed eatery. It is impossible to resist tasting some of the other dishes on the table.
Set in a beautifully renovated old stable near the Moederkerk, De Eetkamer is in the historic heart of Stellenbosch.
This is non pretentious eating with chef Marco Cardoso offering just 12 small plates reflecting global cuisine. The aroma as food reached the table, was enticing. The flavours, colours and textures were superb. Try the Korean fried cauliflower with sweet soy !
It is recommended that you order 4 to 6 plates per 2 people to share, tapas style.
Dishes may include a refreshing tomato, feta crème & basil salad, pan-fried gnocchi with gorgonzola crème & sage beurre noisette, line fish ceviche with soy & jalapeno dressing and trout roe, Moroccan lamb koftas with coriander, mint & sultanas or Japanese fried chicken with flatbread and rich XO sauce. The desert choices were French perfection!
The place buzzes and there is a lovely outdoor area under trees and umbrellas. The wine list is good and we had a delightful waitress.
Marco and his team created good, flavoursome, evocative food which brought back some lovely travel memories.
