The Saunter: Artist Chat – Carl Roberts. Sculptor
“I live in paradise! It is down a panhandle, through a forest and to the house we call home. It is a twitchers (birders) utopia as there are about 400 species on offer. This includes crowned eagles who nest next door, a black sparrow hawks nest on the other side and the occasional Narina Trogon that can be seen from our kitchen window. We have seen duiker, genets, porcupine, wild boar and dassies on the property. It is a lovely and stimulating environment to do what I love doing most which is making sculpture!
I count myself lucky as a traffic jam is getting past the dogs on the way to my studio and rush hour is feeding the chickens. There is limited scope for road rage as I spend my days carving, casting or modeling images which is what I most love doing. It is a passion!
If there is a snake in this Garden of Eden, it is that I am a bit isolated. I am lost in my own world and seldom go out and even then it is usually to the hardware store. However, a studio visitor provides a welcome opportunity to take a break, have a cup of tea, reconnect with my own (human) kind and share my bit of heaven.”
