“People ought to saunter in the mountains — not hike!” the American John Muir said. He wanted people to savour the nature experience, to take their time rather than focusing on clocking up kilometers. So it is appropriate that The Saunter brings you a range of interesting hiking, or rather sauntering, options in the mountains, along the coast and even in cities!

South Africa has a wealth of outdoor activity possibilities. This country is really stunning and hiking clubs are everywhere as hiking is one of the most popular year round activities. One of the oldest clubs, The Mountain Club of South Africa has branches across the country and is for both mountain climbers as well as hikers. Formed in 1891 they are involved in rescues as well.

The Tankwa Camino- Karoo
You may enjoy hiking alone, with a friend/family, with a guide or join a local mountain club or ramblers group for a good hike with others. Most SA trails which are well known are also well marked. However, be prepared. Plan and do some homework first, make sure someone or parks authorities know where you are going, take a fully charged phone… but it won’t always find reception, and carry the special emergency number in Table Mountain National Park, The Cedarberg and the Drakensberg.

Robberg hike in Plettenberg Bay or Forest Bathing in Cape Town
I can hear seasoned walkers saying yeah, yeah, yeah and suppressing a yawn, but these numbers may just save your life even in minor emergencies such as a sprained ankle, which leads to you not being able to get back. Carry enough water, head cover and an emergency only snack pack plus a change of clothing to keep you warm or dry… our mountain and coastal weather can change suddenly!
