The Eastern Cape is a huge province which extends from KwaZulu Natal to the Tsitsikamma. Warm Indian Ocean waters and many gorgeous
beaches make this a popular holiday area for South Africans but not well known amongst foreign travelers. It includes the unspoilt gem, the
Wild Coast. It has many hilly areas and the mountains include the Drakensberg. From coastal forest it extends into the arid Karoo. The
province is home to the Xhosa people with a rich culture. This is one of only 2 provinces where English is more commonly spoken than
Afrikaans, following British and Irish colonial settlement from the 1820s. Known as Frontier Country, as these settlers were brought in to buffer
colonial settlements from the Xhosa tribes further east.
It has become a wonderful area for game with Addo Elephant Park and increasing numbers of wildlife reserves and private game lodges known
as the Frontier Reserves.
