African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary, a Dyer Island Conservation Trust initiative, is a world-class marine bird rehabilitation centre. The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary has been set up to assist the endangered African penguin, primarily working with the colony of Dyer Island, an Important Bird Area, where the species has declined dramatically by almost 90% in the last 30 years. This means the African penguin could be extinct within a decade without active intervention. The rescue, rehabilitation and release of every single penguin in distress, makes a crucial contribution to the conservation of the species.
This astonishing facility has a fully equipped lab and a vet on standby to treat birds immediately, thereby increasing the survival rate.
This centre is now also creating much-needed awareness around the perils marine birds face out in the wild. Take a glimpse at the big screen TV of what is done behind the scenes in the Rehabilitation area, the Bird Hospital, and the Laboratory/Clinic. Preventing added stress on the birds in rehabilitation by minimizing the number of people allowed in the critical areas. With one-way glass overlooking the Conditioning Pen – visitors can watch the birds in final preparation for release without any disturbance or interference. Feeding time is at 15:00.
The sanctuary depends heavily on donations. To help raise funds, the sanctuary offers a range of cute penguin-themed curios, with all proceeds supporting penguin conservation. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the onsite coffee shop, which helps generate additional income for the sanctuary’s important work.
