Covered in Fynbos, the Swartberg Pass offers a lovely morning of birding.  Although you won’t be ticking a large number of birds off your list, you will be ticking some special birds… and they offer great opportunities for some beautiful photographs.

***

The Cape Rockjumper, our 2021 Bird of the Year can often be seen hopping from rock to rock at the summit of the pass.

When the sugarbush proteas are flowering in March the mountain is abuzz with Cape Sugarbirds and the little Orange-Breasted Sunbirds.

Throughout the year the endemics are around including the Cape Siskin and Protea Canary.

Then of course if you look up into the sky you may see the Jackal Buzzard or our nesting Verreaux’s Eagles.

***

What makes this a unique birding experience, is the history of the pass and the very special flora that one can take a close look at too. Your guide will tell you some stories about the building of the pass and show you some of the endemic plant species that attract the birds to this wonderful heritage site.  Enjoy your packed breakfast and a coffee with a view of the Klein Karoo while listening to the sounds of the berg.  There really is a little of everything in this trip.  You can even walk a small part of the Pass if you want to stretch your legs.
