Umdoni Park’s 508 acres of beautiful surroundings were protected from 1918 and include parkland, indigenous forest, the picturesque and challenging 18 hole Umdoni Golf Course and a semi private beach with tidal pool. It is named after the lovely water loving tree that is frequent in this area, the Umdoni Tree, Syzigium Cordatum. Some 20 kilometres of forest and beachfront hiking trails are well maintained and clearly marked. There are easy strolls to beautiful viewpoints and one to the Gorge is challenging and has a rewarding waterfall along the way.
Rare birds can be found in Umdoni Park’s lush coastal forest. The 230 species of birds sighted, include the Green Malkoha, the Narina Trogon and the Magpie Mannikin. You will hear the Purple Crested Turaco (Lourie) and the Trumpeter Hornbill, amongst others, from the guesthouse.
Botha House has an impressive history and was built as a “little cottage” for Annie, wife of Louis Botha, South Africa’s first Prime Minister. It was used as a convalescent home for war veterans for a short while. Now, we can all enjoy this special place.
