Ganora Guest Farm is a sheep farm situated just outside Nieu Bethesda in the foothills of the majestic Sneeuberg Range in the Karoo. The farmstead and guest cottages nestle deep in the slopes of a depression carved into the bedrock by ancient rivers in pre-historic times. The surrounding rock formations and rich fossil beds on the farm bear testimony to the events that contributed to the formation of this vast and beautiful land.
The outlooks are lovely with river and mountain scenes. Activities include swimming and relaxing around the outdoor pool, hiking, birding (their list is of 184 species), mountain biking tours to the fossil collection and rock art sites on the farm as well as chilling next to the licenced bar, or on the lovely guest house stoep with a good book, tennis plus table tennis, dining in the characterful hall with warming fire in winter or travelling the short 7kms to interesting Nieu- Bethesda. Exploring farm related activities may include feeding the lambs, or sheep shearing depending on the season. These are Dohne Merino sheep- a breed good for meat as well as wool. If you are lucky, you may have a close wildlife experience as birds and animals, including meerkats, are sometimes rehabilitated here.
Ganora was registered in 1838, just after the Great Trek. Your hosts today, are welcoming Hester and JP. The old kraal, shearing barns, sheep sheds, workshops and workers cottage have been tastefully renovated to provide characterful, tasteful accommodation with original mud packed mud and stone walls and reed ceilings (from Agave poles).
