The Greyton Nature Reserve was established by Prof Brian Rycroft in 1977 when he was the Director of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. It is 22000 hectares and includes high peaks, waterfalls and valleys. There is good birdlife in places and beautiful views. It is a hikers’ paradise. Here are 3 options.
Greyton to McGregor Hike or Boesmanskloof Hike is the most well -known. Distance: 12.7km each way. Elevation: 951m elevation gain Rating: 4.8 Difficulty: Hard Time: Depends on your fitness
This is a 2 day hike with a stayover at McGregor then returning the same way. There are steep difficult hills as you leave Greyton, a lovely swimming spot part way through and fantastic views. There is very little shade so this hike is best done in cooler weather.
An alternative way to do this is to do just the McGregor to Greyton leg. It is much easier, you get the same views and it takes less time (2.5 to 4 hours).
Platkloof Trail Distance: 2.4km circular route Elevation: 103m elevation gain Rating: 4.5 Difficulty: Easy to moderate if unfit. Time: 30 mins to an hour.
As you enter the reserve, take the first path left. A very comfortable walk with small inclines, but you do get the sense of being in the mountains. There is lovely fynbos around you and a waterfall. This is a birders walk.
Hardepeerkloof Hike Distance: 5.6km circular route Elevation: 325m elevation gain Rating: 4.5 Difficulty: Moderate Time: 2 to 2.5 hours.
A medium length hike, with small inclines which gets you into the mountains and enjoying views. Perfect walk for birders as there is fynbos, a few streams and a waterfall.
