Groot Constantia, a heritage site, is an important part of World Wine Heritage as well as encapsulating a fascinating part of South African history.
Simon van der Stel chose this site well. With cooling breezes from both the mountains behind and from False Bay, the grapes can mature for longer.
The buildings are beautiful and architecturally significant, there are museums of interest, good restaurants and delectable wine tastings to enjoy.
Groot Constantia wine is mentioned in literature by both Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Even earlier, it was bought at European auctions by Louis Phillipe, King of France and Frederick the Great of Prussia.
This heritage has evolved and the estate continues to produce superb wines today.
