Houghmordeen Jansen, affectionately nicknamed and now known as Holmes, was born and raised in Smutsville, a harmonious and community based township area in Sedgefield.
He has created multiple unique styled artworks sourced from scenes locally. Most of his works have been exhibited in places like The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum in Port Elizabeth, Art Mode and Art It Is Gallery and The Gavin Project in Johannesburg as well as Knext Art Gallery, The AVA Gallery, Art It Is Gallery and Skinny Legs Luxury Café. He has also had two successful Art10K silent auctions in Cape Town.
His works predominantly consist of common township based illustrative pieces, some of which form part of a series that depicts the lifestyle of people in his hometown going about their daily livelihood tasks. He photographs and later creates individual figures and certain areas through a self-developed minimalist graphical style with fine art integrity. The work is charming and captures a part of South African society.This is his way of conveying the memories he has today of growing up in Smutsville.
Holmes has exhibited alongside established artist such as, Lionel Smith and Richard Scott. After graduating from the study of graphic design in 2018 he started working as an apprentice to Mark Hilltout, a former global Executive Creative Director for Ogilvy (international media company).
He is usually at the Saturday morning market in Sedgefield. You can also visit his Sedgefield studio by appointment.
