May-Gene was introduced to quilting in 2003. Spending time in her quilt studio and shop transports her to her ‘happy place’ – she always has several interesting projects on the go and she usually has a handwork project for those spare moments. She has been teaching since 2008 and has SAQG Teachers’ Accreditation. She is also an Apliquick Accredited Teacher.
She has a strong desire to share her quilting passion and as a traditional quilt teacher, she aims to give her students a solid grasp of the basic foundations of quilting. May-Gene has only entered a few quilts in exhibitions. Her ‘Sunset over Africa’, made for a Robin Hood Foundation fundraiser, won Third Prize on the Pietermaritzburg Royal Show in 2014 and ‘Kathryn Kure’s Peonies’, a commissioned piece, won a Special prize on the same show. Both these quilts went on to tour the 2014 World Quilt Show.
Quilting is Sue’s passion. She is happiest in front of the sewing machine in her studio or with some handwork on her lap. She finds great joy in watching her students grow from not knowing anything at all about quilting to becoming accomplished quilters. She believes that classes should be fun, informative and valuable learning experiences. Sue has been teaching for 14 years and has completed her SAQG Teachers’ Accreditation Course’.
She is an International award-winning quilter (her quilt ‘Tree Spirit’ won Best of Country at the World Quilt Show in 2016) and has the prestigious title of Master Quilter (having won numerous First Prizes, Highly Commended, Judges Choice and Third Prizes at various National Quilt Festivals over the years)
