Midmar Dam is a combined gravity and earth-fill dam. This large expanse of water is surrounded by lovely rolling hills and is within a nature reserve managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
It is a very pretty area. There are great places under shade to picnic and braai facilities are available. The ablutions receive very mixed reports.

This great recreational area and used for boating, swimming, waterskiing, picnicking, and fishing. A section of the dam is zoned for the power boats and jet skis and an area is zoned for sailing.
Power boat skippers must have a Category R Certificate. There is a boat shop for the hire of yachts, canoes and windsurfers and the purchase of fishing equipment and boat spares – open on weekends and at peak holiday times
The dam water is bilharzia free.
The game park is stocked with a variety of game such as red hartebeest, black wildebeest, zebra, blesbok, reedbuck and oribi. You can drive, walk or bike through to view the game.
Camping is popular and there are some chalets.
Please note that no pets or animals are allowed to be brought onto the reserve.

In February, The Midmar Mile takes place. Swimmers of all ages and abilities join in the biggest open-water swim in the world, by completing a distance from one side of the dam to the other.
