Created to support endangered vultures through a sustainable Vulture Restaurant.

Uncontaminated carcasses are placed to provide a safe supplementary food source for the vultures, helping ensure their survival and contribution to ecological balance.

One-way glass allows for clear close-up photography. A maximum of six guests can comfortably view and photograph vultures, and other birds. Exquisite mountain backdrops, comfortable seating, darkened windows and a few electrical plug points for recharging camera batteries and phones, make for an enjoyable experience. The Hide has educational material so visitors can learn more about conservation and wildlife in the region.

Vultures are nature’s clean-up crew, scavenging and disposing of animal remains that could otherwise become breeding grounds for disease. By swiftly recycling organic matter, vultures help prevent the spread of illnesses that could affect both humans and animals.

Despite their importance, vulture numbers across Africa are in rapid decline and their numbers have decreased by up to 70%. Of the six vulture species that occur in South Africa, all are either Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered. They are critical to our ecosystems and the decline is serious. Only 50 to 100 breeding pairs of Bearded Vulture remain in South Africa and Lesotho and about 4,500 breeding pairs of Cape Vulture.

The Southern Drakensberg is a stronghold location for two of South Africa’s cliff nesting species: the Bearded and Cape Vulture. The hide is in a World Heritage Site and one of the five largest protected areas in South Africa – one of the last strongholds for several threatened and endangered species.
