The NG Church (or Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk/ Dutch Reformed Church) is Barrydale’s landmark building.

The original church was built in 1880 at Moreson but as the congregation and little town grew, a new church was needed. The cornerstone was laid in 1908 and it was completed in 1911. The clock tower is distinctive and it has  stained glass and lancet windows. The church clock with its chiming bells has been in operation since 1908. The ceiling is wooden and there is a choir gallery. The organ is a classic Norman and Beard from Norwich, England.

“A plaque near the front door of the church bears the following inscription (translated into English):

In time of hardship and trial
You are in the Cloud
That lies on the Langeberg
And feeds the Mountain Streams.
In prosperity You
Are in the spring blossom
Of apricot and peach tree
That in the summer
Bears red and yellow fruits.”

This church reflects early 20th-century South African church architecture and serves as a testament to the community’s spiritual roots. Adjacent to the church is the 1897 pastor’s house, showcasing period architecture. The church remains central to Barrydale’s heritage and identity.
