An historic farm and vineyard converted sensitively to self catering of a high standard.
Dating back 300 years, the farm was the furthest outpost in the Cape of the Dutch East Indies Company and became a vital staging and replenishment post on the wagon route to Swellendam.
For a period, it was part of the famous Vergelegen, built by Governor van der Stel. Its original homestead was the birthplace of one of the Presidents of the early Boer Republics. The farm buildings are a most beautiful example of traditional and unspoiled Cape Dutch architecture.
The original and fully restored old homestead dates from 1750, while the later (1840’s) Manor House is one of the Cape’s architectural masterpieces. The farm today provides accommodation of an exceptional standard for self catering.
An excellent restaurant, The Cellars, for when you do not feel like cooking has sharing small plates seasonally based with a small wine list, and the estate’s own Penhill wines. With fruit trees and vegetable garden, herbs, figs, apricots, pomegranates, apples, asparagus and more are seasonally available. There is plenty to do on this 3500 acre farm – dams and pools for fishing, canoeing or simply splashing about in, excellent tennis court, boules, croquet, not to mention trails for gentle walks, more strenuous hikes and several fantastic mountain bike trails leading directly from the farm. Regret-no pets.
