This was a crucial battle in the Second Anglo Boer War (1899-1902), with the British desperate to create a route to enable the relief of the besieged Ladysmith. It is a battle famed for the numbers of dead, for errors and for the presence of 3 important future leaders: Winston Churchill, who fought in the battle, Louis Botha who became the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa and Mahatma Gandhi, who served as a stretcher bearer.
A visit to the battlefield with a historical guide is very interesting and poignant.
