A converted dairy, a lovely landscaped garden with wild grasses, lavender and swathes of colour at different times of the year plus well cooked, simple and simply delicious food is the recipe for an evolving success.

Beth and James took their time to create the gardens first, then the eatery and lastly a Taproom with a few choices and great vibe. As in the Aesop Fable, the Hare and the Tortoise…”slow and steady wins the race”.

Breakfasts and lunches in the Fable Eatery cater for carnivores as well as vegans and vegetarians. Cape Town chef Mark uses the lovely herbs from the garden to infuse and enhance his food. What ingredients are not from the garden, are locally sourced.

It is refreshing to see freshly squeezed juices. Good coffee and wonderful cake choices  make this a great mid meal stop. Breakfasts include 3 choices of Eggs Benedict or Turkish Cilbir eggs on sourdough with garlicky dill yoghurt, sauteed baby spinach, roasted tomatoes, mint, peri oil and spicy butter. Another is: Chai French Toast served with Mascapone, figs, bacon, syrup, orange and lime zest. Lunch includes Wild Mushroom Risotto with seasonal mushrooms, truffle oil, marinated artichokes, roast tomatoes, Parmesan & Milanese gremalata. Try Rump Chimichuri with garden herb butter, roast whole garlic and fries.  Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl  served with sticky rice, edamame beans, red onion, carrots, beetroots, pickled ginger & seasonal fruit is delicious. A good “loaded” Buddah Bowl and an alternative milk for coffee… Oat, Almond & Soya are amongst the vegetarian options. There is a good wine list.

The gardens are great for walking through and heaven for little ones. They suggest taking a clean set of clothes for them! Beyond the jungle gym, there is shallow water to splash in, some secret corners, a tunnel and a maze.

***

The Taproom makes some lovely G&Ts and has yummy pizzas. Selection of 3 beers, a cider and a couple of whiskeys are small but sufficient and the atmosphere is great.  Taproom hours are Thursday and Sunday: 11 to 17.00 and Friday and Saturday: 11 to 21.00.
