A lovely family run farm, nestling in the rolling hills of Karkloof with great little cafe and a selection of 12 French and other Artisan cheeses. As well as cheese there are complimentary products and of course butter, yogurt and cream.
The cows are pasture fed. The La Petite France cheese factory is on the farm. Jersey and Swedish Red cows dot the green pastures surrounding the dairy and factory. The philosophy is one of natural balance so the focus is on milk quality and not quantity. An abundance of rye grass enables the cows to produce rich, sweet-tasting, top quality milk. Cows, being natural grazers, are given the freedom to graze the fields day and night, the whole year round. They are not fed grains or maize silage since almost all modern grains are genetically modified and are crops which require chemical spraying with insecticides and other poisons.
The cheeses are made the old fashioned way with no chemicals, colourants, stabalisers or any other additives. The process is a hands on, human centric one. Once the imported cultures are added to the 1000 litres of milk that arrives each morning, it is carefully stirred by hand. The whey is then manually drained off and once the milk has begun setting it is poured into cheese moulds to harden before resting in the ‘ripening room’. Each day the cheeses are turned by hand. From start to finish, this is a labour of love as far as one can get from factory processing.
The cheeses are all now vegetarian friendly.
At the cafe try deep fried camembert or brie wedges or have the delicious cheese platter.
