Tokara Restaurant opened in October 2001 and was one of the very first iconic winery restaurants established in the Cape Winelands.
Within the first year of taking of the reigns of the Tokara Restaurant kitchen, chef Carolize Coetzee won the “Haute Performance Award” as South Africa’s most promising chef in the 2020 JHP Gourmet Guide, while the restaurant was included in the authoritative The World’s 50 Best Restaurants new “50Best Discovery” list for 2020. Tokara is located in a beautiful stone and glass building, with views out to the vineyards which roll across the surrounding hills.
Take a comfy seat with a vista of the Constantia mountains and Table Mountain across the vineyards, from the main restaurant or slightly lowered deck is magnificent. Soak in the olive groves and vineyards, where the produce for the plates originates. World-class art installations of huge William Kentridge tapestries and the views give this restaurant a relaxed atmosphere despite the fine dining.
Chef Carelize Coetzee has a fine and deft hand. Dishes are contemporary, beautifully plated and made with seasonal and home-grown organic vegetables. Menu changes are guided by seasonal availability. This talented chef has a food philosophy to create food which evokes memories…. refined ‘plaaskos’ (farm cuisine). This is her reinterpreting of traditional South African cooking.
Some of the options… seared gamefish, smoked pineapple, coriander, green chili & lime or springbok loin with chakalaka, kale, apricot, sweetcorn polenta & bay leaf infused jus. For desert… dark and white chocolate pave with chocolate sponge, blackberry & hazelnut praline ice cream.
Lunch is an à la carte menu and there is a set menu, either five or seven courses, for dinner. Vegans and vegetarians are well catered for.
