The South and North coasts in KwaZulu Natal are very different. The South Coast is more relaxed and many places offer a wider range of budget friendly options. There are some blue flag, or certified very clean beaches. Many beaches have a slight incline close to the beach and swimmers can get dumped or rolled in the smaller waves, which is part of the fun.
A warning is that there has been neglect of infrastructure in parts of the South Coast, so away from the main routes, roads can be very pot holed and in some resorts areas, water is an issue. We advise checking ahead when travelling.
This is an outdoor enthusiasts area, not for just swimming and surfing, but there are good places to hike and bike. A good surf school gets you standing and skimming down a wave in no time at all.The Oribi Gorge is stunning and well worth the trip. The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is also well worth visiting. Off shore is a marine protected area called the Aliwal Shoal which makes for world class diving as well as the chance to dive with sharks, for adrenaline junkies.
Families are well catered for with some brilliant activity venues such as MacBanana.
The South Coast is also known as the Golf Coast, with lovely courses to play on, and even sea views and, of course, breeze to add a bit of challenge.
There are some exceptional artists living and working here and a day out is enhanced by a studio visit!
There are casual and fine dining options that we recommend. Enjoy relaxed and casual sauntering.
